Student Leadership

School life provides many opportunities for young people to develop leadership and representation skills, including being leaders in school governance, sport, creative and performing arts, cultural and community. Student leaders have the potential to influence the school environment and the behaviour of their fellow students by becoming advocates for positive change in the school community.

The leadership roles available to students at Valley View are:  School Captains, School Leaders, Sport Captains, Library Monitors and Technology/ Sound Desk Team.  Another role for the entire Year 6 group is the Flag Raising responsibility, organising and coordinating stalls for the Year 6 Farewell Fundraising Day.

Our 2022 School Leadership Team includes:

At Valley View Public School there will be 2 School Captains and 4 school leaders (depending on eligible applicants this could be reduced to 2 school leaders). If possible, we will have one boy and one girl captain. However, at the Principal’s and Assistant Principal’s discretion this may become two girl captains or two boy captains. This will be dependent on student numbers and or suitability, we will attempt to have 3 girl leaders and 3 boy leaders. This again will be determined by the Principal and or Assistant Principals before the election process begins.

School Captains:

Are members of the school leadership Team with the added responsibility of being the Leaders of the School Leaders.  They provide a student voice and presence within the school.  School Captains work with the School Principal, Assistant Principal, Teachers and students in delivering the values of Respect, Responsibility and Personal Best in all aspects of school life.  They also represent the student body of Valley View to the wider community.  The school captain along with the leaders are expected to show an initiative and flexibility within the role.

The School Captains will:

  • Represent Valley View at community events (eg. ANZAC Day)
  • Host Whole School Assemblies
  • Commit to rehearse and prepare for Whole School and Special Assemblies
  • Work as a leadership team and assist teachers where needed
  • On the playground provide support and assistance to younger students in need
  • Proudly wear the Valley View uniform as an example to other students
  • Conduct tours of the school for special guests.
  • Attend and represent the school at extra-curricular activities (awards nights, ANZAC ceremony) and other events that may arise during the year
  • Assist in the running of brekky club for one term, if required
  • Help organise and run fundraising events
  • Be responsible for writing regular articles for the school newsletter​

School Leaders

The school leaders work alongside and in conjunction with the school captains and represent the school at assemblies and other events as required.  Respect, responsibility and personal best are attributes that they display to encourage positive behaviour, support and leadership. Student Leaders will demonstrate exemplary behaviour in the classroom, the playground, at assembly and on excursions.

The School Leaders will:

  • Assist the Student Leaders and take on their duties when required 
  • Proudly wear the Valley View uniform as an example to other students
  • Be involved on special occasions such as the greeting and thanking of visitors and performers 
  • Conduct important assemblies such as Valley View’s ANZAC Day assembly
  • Take a leading role in whole school assemblies and morning assemblies
  • Be aware of the general behaviour of students in regard to safety and actively advise school staff of issues of concern 
  • Assist in the running of brekky club for one term, if required
  • Assist the Captains in the compilation of articles for the school newsletter
  • Be of general assistance to all members of staff, students, parents and visitors
  • Award a merit certificate at assemblies (in consultation with the other Student Leaders)

Valley View Public School has four sporting houses (Bradman, Laver, Mackay, Fraser). There are two House Captains per house who are responsible for sporting equipment and displaying leadership on the playground. They are responsible for organising teams and promoting sportsmanship at all sporting events.

The House Captains will:

  • Attend all Carnivals for the duration of the carnival
  • Complete Years 3-6 Sports Storeroom duties (under direct supervision) by liaising with staff organising sporting activities, distributing and collecting sports equipment efficiently
  • Setting up/packing up equipment for use at lunch and/or recess
  • Report any equipment that requires repair or replacement
  • Be aware of general behaviour of students in regard to the use of sports equipment and actively advise school staff of issues of concern 
  • Show leadership in the playground by organising games, teams, supervising younger students, etc. 
  • Organise house teams for relays 
  • Encourage house spirit at all sporting events and lead the house chants
  • Assist in the running of brekky club for one term, if required
  • Write sports reports for the Valley View school newsletter
  • Be of general assistance to all members of staff, students, parents and visitors particularly at all sporting events.
